Time for a change – Part 2 – The New Ink Pad Design

DSCN1009

Welcome back!  Today’s post will focus on the new design of the classic ink pads.  Like I said in Part 1, change can be a good thing and I think the ink pad redesign is a wonderful change that will make your stamping much easier. You may wonder why the new design?  The case’s manufacturing mold was about to expire and they can only be used certain number of times before it needs to be replaced.  Instead of ordering new molds of the same design, Stampin’ Up! decided to make some improvements that I know you will love!  In addition the ink has been reformulated to reduce bubbles, especially with brand new juicy pads.  This will ensure you get exceptional ink coverage on solid stamps.

Lets do a side by side comparison of the old pad versus the new pad:

DSCN0991

The new pads are a little more square, the outer case measures 3 5/8″ x 4 1/4″, with the ink pad itself measuring 2 5/8″ x 3 1/2″ x 1/2″.  The old style is slightly narrower and longer with the outer case measuring 3 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ x 3/4″ and the pad at 2 3/4″ x 3 5/8″.

There are still grooves along the edge so you can easily grip the pad when inking larger stamps.

Now lets see the new improvements to the design:

DSCN0998

The old style pads have a lip running around the bottom edge.  Making them a little thicker and when stacking they tend to be a bit wobbly.

The new pads are completely flat except for four tiny little “pegs” on the bottom and four little holes on the top of each pad.

DSCN1005

This allows them to “lock” onto one another when stacking.  An added bonus the thinner design saves space!!

DSCN0999

When the pad is open you now can add a sticker to the inside allowing you to see the color at a glance.

DSCN0992

The label on the front has a larger color block with a small icon showing the color collection it belongs to.  While the In Colors on the old pads did show that they were in that collection the core colors did not.  I love this feature, if you are like me I keep my ink pads by collections.  Now at a glance I can make sure they are in the right grouping.

Opening your new pads:

The pads have been designed to open easier.  They also are not as loose as the old pads reducing the chance of the pad coming out of its track.  That being said here are step by step directions and tips on opening your new pads.

Step 1: Grasp the pad in your hand and place your thumb in the little groove. Then simply lift up and open as you would a compact. No more push and slide.  This may take some getting used to, but once you get the hang of it opening them is super easy!  Tip: The pad will be stiff when you first open it,  but the more you open and close the pad it will loosen and the easier it will be to open.

Step 2: Once open, slide it along the track toward you and lock in place.  Again it will be stiff the first few uses.  This is normal and will loosen the more the pad is used.  The tighter fit is part of the design so the pad portion doesn’t come off the track.  Tip:  To help “grease” the track – try rubbing a birthday candle in the groove.  The wax will act as a lubricant.

Step 3: To close the pad grasp in your hand and place your finger in the channel pull sightly to unlock and then continue pulling until fully extended. Then flip over and snap closed.

Another final note on the ink pads.  Stampin’ Up! will no longer carry Archival Basic Black and Archival Basic Gray.   The Basic Gray will be replaced with a dye based Classic ink and be included the Neutrals Collection.  Note: You cannot use the Archival reinkers on the dye based pad you must use the classic Basic Gray reinker.

As a substitute for the Archival Basic Black you will now use Jet Black StazOn for stamping on non-porus surfaces and  watercoloring.  When using your Blends you will continue to use your Tuxedo Black Memento pad.  Tip: Remember when choosing your ink pad, you want the ink to be the opposite of the medium you are using.  For watercoloring you want a solvent based pad (StazOn) and when using the alcohol based Blends you want a dye based ink (Memento or Stampin’ Up! Classic ink).

As a special promotion, you can purchase the 2018-2020 In Colors with the new pad design along with three different bundles  ranging in price from $57.00 – $127.50 and all include a free item as part of the promotion. Time for a change – Part 1 – The Color Revamp

“Don’t be afraid of change. You may lose something good  but you may gain something even better.”                                                                                                      ~ Unknown

I love change, whether a new hair style or color, moving furniture in my house or reorganizing things in my office or house.  But I know some people are resistant to change they like things to always stay the same.  No matter which category you are in,  I guarantee you are going to LOVE the new colors that Stampin’ Up! is introducing in the new 2018-2019 catalog!  I know I will miss a few of the retiring colors but the new fresh colors taking their place are so stunning I cannot wait to start creating with them!!  And not only are we getting new colors but the ink pads have been redesigned!!

First off let me explain what is happening with our exclusive color collection.  Each year five In-Colors are introduced and five In-Colors are retired.  These colors are around for two years so this year the colors from the 2016-2018 grouping will leave us and the 2018-2020 colors will be introduced.  That is usually it, but this year Stampin’ Up is doing a complete color revamp!  They are retiring thirteen colors and not only bringing back six previously retired colors but they are introducing ten brand new colors, for a total of sixteen new colors!!!  The collections have been reconfigured and they have added a Basics collection consisting of Whisper White, Very Vanilla and Basic Black.  The last time a complete color overhaul took place like this was in 2010!  We did have a refresh in 2013 where several retired colors were brought back but there were no new colors  (other than the In Colors) introduced.

Now for the ink pad redesign.  We are all used to the push and flip method of opening the pads, now all you have to do is open the pad like a compact and slide the lid into place.  In addition to this the ink has been reformulated to reduce bubbles so you will get exceptional ink coverage.  All this in a flatter pad that stacks to save space and a sticker that gets placed inside so you can always see the color at a glance!

Since there is so much information I want to share with you, this post will be two-parts.  Be sure check back later this week for Part 2, an up close look at the new ink pad design, including several tips on using them!

And without further ado, let’s see the retiring In-Colors, the new group and the five from 2017-2019 that are staying for one more year!

Boom! An explosion box, fun to make and even more fun to give!!

DSCN0900

I have been wanting to try an explosion box for a long time.  With fall sneaking up on us so fast, I got to thinking that a haunted house for Halloween would be perfect for my first one!  These amazing boxes look like a regular present until you lift off the lid and all the sides fall down to reveal a little 3D scene hiding inside.  They may take a while to construct but I can’t tell you when I have had this much fun paper crafting!  It was so therapeutic designing it, cutting all the little pieces and trying to come up with creative ways to make all the parts.   Such a great time, even my husband got in on the fun helping me come up with a fun way to make the little fence! Since this is a complex project I did write a pretty long post but please take the time to read it all.  There are a lot of fun tips hopefully you will be inspired to make your own explosion box!

DSCN0902

The first step is to assemble the box bottom.  It is a piece of 12″ x 12″ Whisper White cardstock, scored at 4″ and 8″ on all four sides.  Download the template and box assembly tutorial here.

Next I added the squares of Basic Black to the outside of the box and the Happy Halloween Designer Series Paper (“DSP”).  I wanted the back panel to stand up so the moon and tree would show up behind the house.  Before I adhered this panel to the box, I attached the tree and moon DSP to the Pumpkin Pie square.  Then I drew extensions of the branches using a Basic Black Stampin’ Write marker and two little bats were cut from Basic Black and adhered to the moon. This was set aside.  To make the panel stand up I cut three small trips of scrap cardstock 1″ x 4″ and bent them into an “L” shape.  They were adhered to the back panel and base allowing it to stay upright.  Then I attached the moon panel on top to cover the strips. Next the squares of polka dot DSP were added to the remaining three panels.

I used a piece of Soft Suede cardstock in the center. Since I wanted it to look like a patch of dead grass and dirt Soft Suede ink was sponged randomly on this piece to give it a little “texture”.  The letters B-O-O were cut from Pumpkin Pie cardstock and a little clear Wink of Stella was added to give them a little sparkle.  They were added to the center of the bottom three panels with dimensionals.

I stamped five ghosts on Whisper White with Memento Black ink and cut out using the ghost die. Three were attached to the letters and I set the other two aside to use later.

Now it’s time to start the house.  I have loved these cute little houses since they were introduced last year.  First I cut two of the houses using Basic Gray cardstock. Before assembling I used the embossing paste and brick decorative masks to make the bricks. Since I wanted a slight gray tint, I added a few drops of Smokey Slate into the paste and mixed it all up.  After the bricks were dry I assembled the house using Multipurpose Liquid Glue (“MLG”).  The shingles were cut from Basic Black and attached to the roof.  Don’t throw away the scraps from cutting the shingles, we will use these later on!

Learn how to mix Embossing Paste here

I cut the window frames from Basic Black.  They were glued to scraps of So Saffron then cut them out.  The door is Smoky Slate stamped with the Hardwood background stamp and cut out.  The door frame is Basic Black and the door knob is a little pearl.  One of the ghosts was attached to the house and a few bats were attached in the windows. When fully assembled the house was then glued to the bottom of the box using MLG.  Set aside to dry.

On to the cemetery.  Now this is where I had to really think outside the box.  What was I going to use for the tombstones???  I started flipping through my framelits and looked at the popsicle from Frozen Treats, yup that’s it! I cut two from Smoky Slate and one from Basic Gray, sponged with Basic Gray ink to give the appearance of stone.  They were bent and the trimmed.  The last ghost was attached to the center tombstone so he is peeking out.

The little fence proved to be quite the challenge.  My husband came to my stamp room to see how I was doing.  I was playing with different things but I was stuck on what to use to make the little fence.  He happened to be sitting across from me and was playing with the scraps from the cut shingles  He grabbed my snips, cut a little and voila a little fence! LOVE that man!  Not only has he always supported me in my stamping business but he always willing to help me when I get stampers block.

20246041_10207139065314625_6654075788584763017_n

Me & my husband Brian

The path was torn pieces of Basic Gray then sponged with some Soft Suede to age them.

The final step is the box top.  Cut a piece of Whisper White cardstock 8 1/4″ x 8 1/4″. Score at 1″ and 2″ on all four sides. Download the template and box lid tutorial here. Assemble the box lid according to the tutorial.  I based this part of the template on the banker’s boxes I use at work for storage.

Attach a Pumpkin Pie square with polka dot DSP panel on top.  Stamp the cat image From Spooky Cat using Pumpkin Pie ink on Whisper White, cut out with the cat punch.  Two ovals were cut from Basic Black and Pumpkin Pie to layer together.  “Trick or Treat” was stamped using a Basic Black Stampin Write marker so I could ink each word separately.  After assembling the oval the cat was adhered using a dimensional.  To add a little extra something, two bats were added and a black rhinestone dots the “i”. The completed oval was attached to the lid using dimensionals. To finish it off a strip of 7/8″ striped ribbon was attached to the edge of the lid.

DSCN0905

And the final project!

DSCN0901

I knew this little haunted house was going to be a lot of fun to make!  Of course after I was done with this project my head was swimming with all kinds of ideas.  I can’t wait to try my next one!

I Miss You!!

As many of you have noticed I haven’t posted in quite some time.  That is because as much as I would love to work my Stampin’ Up! business full-time, I do have a full time job at a CPA firm.  And as you may know,  in the US from December through April  15th it is tax time! And this year it went an extra 3 days until April 18th.  During this time I am so busy at work that I barely have time to breathe let alone devout as much time as I would like to my stamping business.  And that is OK.

As I keep saying this business can be run any way I want and each year I have to step back for a few months but I know when I return my business is right where I left it.

I still hold classes during tax season and we had a wonderful all day stamp event in January but finding the time for my videos and daily blog posts is an uphill battle.  With my classes and events I do get to see many of you on a regular basis but I miss sharing all my card and project ideas with you on my blog.  But I will be back very soon with videos and project ideas galore!

Oh and I have some very exciting news!!  As many of you know my daughter Sarah helps me so IMG_0993much with my website and videos, plus she is my right hand when it comes to my classes, events and craft shows.  Without her guidance and support I really don’t think I would have a website up and running let alone videos and pictures.  Well she decided to join the Stampin’ Up! family and recently became a demonstrator!  She plans on focusing her business on children and bringing stamping to them. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Lesley University College of Art and Design in Cambridge, MA and will be going back to school for her Master’s in education as she plans on opening a pre-school centering on education through art.  And she will be joining me this November in Salt Lake City for Stampin’ Up! OnStage.  So proud to have her join me!!

I do want to share a quick sneak peek at one of the suites that will be available in the NEW 2017-2018 Annual Catalog, the Eastern Palace Suite.

Shareable-1_EasternPalace_Apr0417_ENG[1]See those three ink pads peeking out?  Say hello to three of the new In-Colors!! From the top there is Tranquil Tide, a gorgeous blue-green color, Lemon Lime Twist – a fun bright green and Fresh Fig a rich deep berry.   You will also see a new product, Gold Vinyl Stickers that coordinate with the suite beautifully.  I can’t wait to try them out on all types of cards and home decor!  The detailed Designer Series Paper features Very Vanilla, Fresh Fig, Lemon Lime Twist, Tranquil Tide and Dapper Denim.  The photopolymer stamp set, Eastern Beauty is bold yet elegant and can be bundled with the coordinating Eastern Medallions Thinlits.  Such a fun suite!  I will be having a class on May 6th featuring three projects using this suite.  For more info please see my current class schedules.

During the month of May, Stampin’ Up! will be releasing the entire suite prior to the catalog release in June.  This is something they have never ever done before!  I am so excited about that, plus there will be several bundles with bonus offerings.  Please make sure you stop back by next week, I will have several samples up and more information on this great offer!

Thank you for visiting! Over the next few weeks I will be posting several project ideas using stamps and accessories from the retired list.  These items are available through May 31st or while supplies last.  For an up to date list please visit my online store.

Holiday Decor – JOY Boxes

dscn0698

Here is an easy little holiday decor project using 3″ x 3″ White Gift boxes, Designer Series Paper, little ornaments using the Merry Tags framelits and letters cut using the Large Letters framelits. Since it is fairly easy but does take some time to assemble, I didn’t do a video, but went with pictures to show the project.  If you have any questions about this project, please contact me any time!

To begin – assemble three of the White Gift boxes, discard the acrylic sleeve (if preferred you can use the sleeve over the finished sides as added protection).  Next cut 12 pieces of This Christmas Designer Series Specialty Paper.  You will cut these slightly smaller, 2 7/8″ x 2 7/8″.  Set the front piece for each box aside and using the wide end of the Multipurpose liquid glue attach one square to the two sides and back leaving the front, bottom and top clear.

With the Merry Tags Framelits, cut three of the solid tags using Garden Green cardstock and three of the filigree ornaments using the Gold Glimmer paper. Using the Multipurpose liquid glue attach the glimmer paper to the solid piece, making sure the Garden Green peeks through. To this attach a piece of Cherry Cobbler Bakers Twine at the top and secure to the square of DSP that will be on the front of the box with dimensionals. Then secure the excess bakers twine to the back with a glue dot.  Attach to the front of the block with the multipurpose glue.

dscn0706

Cut the letters “J”, “O” and “Y” from Cherry Cobbler cardstock, attach to the blocks as shown with dimensionals.

And there you go!  The boxes can be filled with treats or just put on display!

Merry Mice is an adorable set that worked well with the new Cable Knit Dynamic Textured Impressions Embossing Folder and the Bakers Twine Trio

I had fun embossing the Merry Medley background stamp and Santa’s Sleigh.  I always forget how striking embossing can look.

Now that we have had a little sneak peek of Christmas stamps, I will share some Halloween and Thanksgiving ideas this weekend.  I told you this catalog is chock full of great products and ideas, only  a few more weeks until it will be unveiled!  Check back in a few days for more ideas!

Happy Stamping!
