Time

Time is something we all would like more of.  More time to accomplish our daily tasks, more time with loved ones, or maybe more time spent doing things we love.  But time has a way from getting away from  us.  We all lead busy lives and as such we tend to just go through the motions of the day instead of really taking it all in and making memories that will last a lifetime.

Now what does this have to do with stamping? It turns out quite a bit!  Yes stamping is a hobby, but it can be so much more.  You can have some alone time to get lost in creativity, allowing you to reset and rejuvenate.  You can get together with friends and family to enjoy each others company while stamping away. Or you could use that time to share your love of stamping with others by sending them cards to let them know you are thinking of them or by teaching others how to stamp.

I hear frequently from people “I don’t have time to stamp” or “I used to stamp all the time with friends but we don’t anymore”.  With the holidays approaching now is the perfect time to get back to stamping and remembering all the joy it offers.

Next weekend I will be stamping with my daughter.  I am so excited to get together with her to stamp table number cards for my son’s upcoming wedding on October 30th.  Now that she is grown and we both have full time jobs, we don’t get together as often as we once did. Stamping is something that we both enjoy and brings us together.

I treasure spending time with my children and family, and as you know time is not forever.  We are only given so much it is important to spend it wisely.

In November, I will be offering two Holiday Card Buffet Events.  Why not join me for a few hours and have some fun!   These are very low key events, you can come whenever your schedule allows and stamp just a few cards or a whole stack.  Then you can send those beautiful creations to your friends and family to let them know how much they mean to you.  After the past few years I know everyone can use a little more joy in their lives.

Happy Stamping!!

Why should we send cards?

Posted in Christmas, Personal Share by stamptilyoudrop

mailbox

In this day and age you have Facebook reminding you of your friends birthdays, you can send a quick text to thank someone or send an email invite. While this may seem fine to most people, we are slowly losing the fine art of communication.   Even calling people on the phone is starting to fade by the wayside, it’s just easier to “talk” via text.

I can remember when I was young, getting cards for birthdays and seeing a little personal note inside that would make you feel extra special.  Or sitting down and writing thank you notes to people letting them know how much their gift meant to you.

While I have had this conversation with numerous people over the years it wasn’t until I recently watched a movie that it really hit home how much a card can impact the life of someone.

This past week I watched Write Before Christmas. In this movie a young woman’s boyfriend breaks up with her right before the holidays and before she had a chance to send him several Christmas cards she bought for him.  She decides to send those five cards to several people in her life, writing something in each card thanking them for something they did for her that made a difference in her life. She chose her brother, her aunt, her music teacher, her best friend and a pop star.  This kicked off a chain of events for each recipient that might not have happened if it wasn’t for the card they received letting them know why they are so special to this woman.

The point of the movie is you never know how much a few words can change someone’s life and as people who love to make cards, it’s just as important to send those cards to the people we love and care about.

I have decided to embrace the spirit of the movie and send cards to people that have had a big impact on my life.  I want to let them know how much they have meant to me and I wouldn’t be the person I am today with out them.

I hope you too follow suit and remember this holiday season, it really is better to give than receive.

Happy stamping!

Joanne

Stamping for therapy and stress relief – a personal journey

Posted in About me, Personal Share, Uncategorized by stamptilyoudrop

I don’t do many personal posts but many of you have been asking why I haven’t updated my blog since January.

Some of you know and some don’t.  On February 16th, while we were out of town, my husband had a massive heart attack.  We were driving to Utica to go to a huge fishing sale at Bass ProShops.  The day was going great, then all of a sudden he said he didn’t feel well, asked me to look up where the nearest hospital was.  Then he said no call 911 and he pulled over.  This all happened in a matter of minutes, no warning at all.  He didn’t have the normal symptoms that a man would have like a tightening in the chest or numbness in his arm.  His symptoms we more subtle, the doctors said it was very similar to what a woman would have.  He got extremely sleepy and broke out in a cold sweat.

Learn how to spot the symptoms of a heart attack or stroke

Not only were we 90 minutes from our house, I was suddenly all alone while he was whisked away in an ambulance lights and sirens blaring.  I had no idea where I was never mind trying to find the hospital.  They said I couldn’t follow them since they would not be obeying any traffic lights or signs, time was not on our side and every minute counted.  I burst into tears, but one EMT was so understanding and stayed behind so I could follow him.

Brian & Me david Wedding

At our son’s wedding September 2018

In the ER his room was a flurry of activity it seemed like doctors and nurses were everywhere, the doctor told me he was having a massive heart attack and they needed to get him to the cath lab ASAP.  I barely got to see him before they ran off with him down the hall to the elevators.  Again I was left alone trying to come to grips with what was happening and sitting all alone in a waiting room since it was late on a Saturday afternoon.  I was able to get in touch with my children who all left their homes  in Albany and Connecticut then rushed to Utica to be with me and their father.

Turns out he had 90% blockage in one artery and a small tear that they were able to repair.  The doctor’s called it a widow maker and that we were very lucky we were so close to the hospital and that the EMTs were able to get him there in time.  If we were home he would have just laid down thinking he was tired and just not feeling well. He probably would never had woken up.  We definitely had angels with us that day.  He spent several days in Cardiac ICU, my daughter and oldest son stayed with me in Utica until he was released.  I told my other two sons to go home so they wouldn’t miss work , my one son’s fiance had school and I needed my youngest to take care of my animals.

When something like this happens it shakes you to the very core.  I have been with this man for more than half my life and he is my rock.  I had no desire to do much of anything, let alone stamping.  Some days it was a struggle to get out of bed and go to work. Every time we were apart I was so worried something was going to happen.

So my stamping took a back burner and during this time I completely lost my creativity.  I knew I had to get out of my funk but wasn’t sure how.

I read many articles on how art and crafting have been shown to be extremely therapeutic.  One article I found focused on a young woman who lost her brother suddenly.  She would have anxiety and panic attacks, what helped her?  Knitting.

Another article stated that crafting, no matter what the craft, be it knitting, painting, and even paper crafting help in stress reduction. Although it differs from art therapy, craft therapy can still be extremely beneficial.  I didn’t really feel like stamping but these articles inspired me to try.  Maybe it could help me too.

I started out by cleaning and organizing my stamp room. I wasn’t quite ready to jump right into stamping.  Then I picked some of favorite sets and colors then played a little here and there.  Before I knew it it was April and time for OnStage in Atlantic City.  Even thought I still had no creativity in me I went.  For the first time at a Stampin’ Up! event I had no swaps with me, I just didn’t feel like doing any and that was OK.

I really had a great time with my daughter and two very dear friends.  I had so much fun seeing the new catalog and all the products from the new catalog and talking with people I haven’t seen in a while. We stamped and laughed and for the first time in months I relaxed and didn’t dwell on what had happened to Brian.  I realized all those articles were on to something, crafting really did take my mind off things and made feel happy again.

With my husband’s encouragement, I came home and got back in my stamp room, a little at a time.  Before I knew it I was really enjoying myself and realized how much I truly love stamping and how much joy it has brought me over the years. When I’m in my stamp room, I am lost in my own little world.  I watch sappy Hallmark movies and just have fun, forgetting about life for a bit. Stamping really did bring be back from a place I didn’t want to be.  I am sure many people can relate to this that’s why I am sharing something so personal.

My hope is that stamping or any craft can help others the way it has helped me.

Yesterday was the first time I had posted on my blog in quite some time, I really had so much fun planning my September Online Class and creating the projects.

I have a lot of projects to share and videos to make in the upcoming months.  I am happy to say I am on the mend and have my favorite hobby to thank for it.

If you do find yourself in a place where you might need professional help for depression or anxiety please don’t be afraid and reach out.  Everyone needs help once in a while.

Happy Stamping!!

Now on to today’s card share!!

IMG_0772

For this card I decided to go a different route with the little bell.  It really screams Christmas but I was thinking it would be perfect for a wedding card!

dressI love the color purple and so I went with my wedding colors for this card. My bridesmaids wore tea length dresses that were black with beautiful purple hydrangeas on them.  Here is a semi-close up of the dress.  On a side note my husband Brian and I just celebrated or 25th wedding anniversary on July 24th so I had to add the silver foil paper to the card for that milestone!  And of course I always have to add a little glitz to my cards and Wink of Stella is my go to when I want a touch of bling!

IMG_0773

Card Directions:

  • Run the silver foil through the 3D Dynamic Tufted embossing folder.  I love the elegant look of this folder, it’s great for a variety of cards!  Then attach to the Basic Black panel and then to the Highland Heather card base.
  • Using the Stitched Season medium frame cut the shape from Highland Heather cardstock, then run through the Subtle 3D Dynamic embossing folder.  I did it this order so the lines from the embossing wouldn’t flatten out when running through the plates of the Big Shot.
  • Cut the smaller stitched frame from Whisper White cardstock and stamp the greeting using Highland Heather ink. Splatter Wink of Stella all over the cut out by hitting it against your hand.  This will make a light spray of shimmer!  Make sure you put down scrap paper first it does go everywhere!!
  • Using Staz-On black ink stamp three bells.  Color with Gorgeous Grape, Smoky Slate and Basic Black watercolor pencils.  Using a blender pen with a very light touch blend so there are no lines.  Go over the top of each using Wink of Stella and add a pearl on the clapper of the bell.
  • Cut each bell out using the frame from the Stitched Season framelits and attach to the Whisper White panel as shown using glue dots.  Attach Whisper White shape to Highland Heather shape using dimensionals and then to card front again with dimensionals.
  • Add Whisper White panel on the inside of the card.

Card Dimensions:

  • Highland Heather Cardstock – 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″, scored at 4 1/4″ for card base
  • Highland Heather scrap large enough for medium frame
  • Basic Black 3 3/4″ x 5″
  • Silver foil 3 5/8″ x 4 7/8″
  • Whisper White 4″ x 5 1/4″ (for inside of card)
  • Whisper White scrap pieces for bells and small frame

I’m so excited and I just can’t hide it!

Posted in 2017-2018 Annual Catalog, Personal Share by stamptilyoudrop

20170322_ac17-cover_en-usNothing is more exciting than placing that first order from the new catalog.  After looking at it every night for a month before going to bed (as you know that assures visions of stamps and ink dancing around in your head).  Not to mention all the drooling over the new stamps, toys and my personal weakness; ribbon.  Then on June 1st we get the green light to order anything from the catalog. Of course the first order is never easy. I have written my list of must haves and changed it so many time I have lost count.  And I as was placing that first order I had to keep shifting things around to get the most bang for my buck.

Then comes the hard part, waiting for my box of happiness to arrive.  I did pay extra for 2 day shipping since I just couldn’t wait over a week for it.  I got the message yesterday morning from UPS alerting me that it will arrive tomorrow and I had to do a little happy dance in the privacy of my office.

IMG_1122 (1)

Doin’ a happy dance, it’s on the way!!

So all day Sunday I started to design cards in my head and I kept thinking to myself; I cannot wait to get my hands on that embossing paste!  And the stamp sets. And all the ribbon that will  be taking over my stamp room. And who could forget about the glossy paper. Be still my heart!  This was  one of my favorite products I am so happy it is back.  There are so many techniques that I haven’t done in a while and I can’t wait to share them with you.  I had to write down all my ideas in a notebook because my brain was on overload and I didn’t want to forget them when I’m released to the wild of my stamp room.

I went to work today and all I could think about was getting home and spending the night with my new goodies.  But what  to play with first…that is the million dollar question! I am thinking I will put my planner together first then play with that embossing paste!

e2bd3107b5ffaed9353fb845409a435c

So home I go to wait for the familiar rumble of the UPS truck coming down the street. I saw this meme the other day and that is how I feel when I am waiting for my new stuff to arrive.  I can remember when my children were little how they would listen for the music and then get so excited waiting for it to stop in front of the house.  That is now me and my ice cream truck is brown (too bad he doesn’t play some music to alert me he is coming).  Then it happens….the dog jumps on the love seat in the window and starts barking to let me know that the big brown truck has stopped in front of the house. I guess I really don’t need music when my 100 lb German Shepherd is on duty.  I maintain my composure and wait for him to ring the bell and get back in the truck before I open the door and snatch the box off the front porch.  Then I walk rather quickly to my stamp room to open THE BOX.

Now comes the fun part unpacking all my goodies! And away we go…….

DSCN0817

Now what did I get? I have sets and suites and accessories oh my! But one of the great things about being a demonstrator is the discount!  After my discount, Stampin’ Rewards earned, one 50% off item and the extra $35 in rewards I received almost $600 worth of product and paid only $370, that’s a savings of $230 and I didn’t have to cut any coupons!  Wowza!

Happy Mother’s Day!!

Posted in 2017-2018 Annual Catalog, Card Ideas, Card Share, Designer Series Paper, Personal Share by stamptilyoudrop

DSCN0777 copy

Tomorrow is Mother’s Day.  A day to honor our moms and let them know how much they mean to us.  I am blessed with four wonderful children who are my world.  They are all grown now and watching them lead their lives and share in their accomplishments, no matter how big or small, is the greatest gift they have can give me.

I wanted to make a special card for my mother in law whom I love dearly.  She is an amazing woman who raised an amazing son.  For that I am eternally grateful.

I decided to use a new stamp set from the new 2017-2018 Annual Catalog – Daisy Delight along with Designer Series Paper – Delightful Daisy and the coordinating punch.  I added a few details using Wink of Stella and the new Gold Faceted Gems.

It would not be Mother’s Day without remembering my mom.  Like many this day can be sad, I lost my mother in 2001.  I always go to the cemetery and bring her flowers but it is not the same as having her in person. I miss calling her daily to let her know how my day was or sharing all the things her grandchildren have done.

I always think of those of us who have a mom watching over us in heaven on this day as well as those that have lost children or others that desperately wanted children but were never blessed.  I ask that you keep them in your prayers tomorrow.  If you know someone who has lost a loved one, why not give them a call or better yet send them a card letting them know you are thinking of them.

Happy Halloween!!!

halloween-decor-treat-class-10-01-16

Happy Halloween Everyone!!!

I know I haven’t been posting this past week, I was pretty sick with a cold that went into a respiratory infection and I was down for the count!  But like I always say this business allows me to step away when I need to and then come right back.  I LOVE the flexibility that offers me.

I will be posting this week since I have so much to share with you, but I will only have one video to share because I am getting ready to travel to beautiful Secaucus, NJ for the fall OnStage Event with Stampin’ Up!.  Being sick all last week I missed a whole week of prep for my card swaps so this week I am playing catch-up!  I will be back in full force next week with videos and cards ideas!

What is OnStage?  I am soooooo glad you asked! (insert HUGE smile from me here!) Twice a year Stampin Up! has gatherings around the world for Stampin’ Up! Demonstrators.  At these events we learn about new products, get to see the brand new catalogs before anyone else, learn ways to make our businesses better for us and our customers, see old friends from all over the country, participate in amazing card swaps, and get so many great ideas to bring back to all of YOU!!!

This is the first local event I am able to attend.  Last year I was supposed to travel to Baltimore, but we had a family emergency and had to cancel.  Unfortunately in April for the next one I wasn’t able to go due to tax season at my day job.  So I am super excited about attending this one!

This is something I really missed when I took time off from being a demonstrator.  We used to go to our annual convention each year in July and it would be in a different place each year.  I have traveled to San Diego, Kansas City, Minneapolis, Orlando, Las Vegas (twice) and Salt Lake City (twice).  These events were so much fun!  They truly were some of the best times I have had.  There is nothing like getting together with thousands of other stampers and doing what we love….share ideas and stamp!  Although this gathering will be smaller I know the excitement in the air will still be all around.

I hope everyone has an awesome and safe Halloween!!

Stamp Room Tour

Posted in About me, Personal Share, Uncategorized by stamptilyoudrop

When I first started out, like most of you, I bought a few supplies and kept them in a small box.  That grew to plastic storage bins and before you knew it I had taken over the dining room.  I really wanted my own creative space but with four children space was at a premium in my house.  I had a large walk-in storage closet that I made into a cozy little crafting space. It worked out fine but as my collection of stamps, inks and papers grew my little room wasn’t cutting it any more, but I had no place to expand.

We moved that summer to another house, this one with an attached garage plus a huge two car detached garage in the back.  Since my husband claimed the back garage he converted the attached garage to my current space. It has been fifteen years and this is my happy place.  It’s here I can relax, binge watch Netflix and just let my creative self go.

My space isn’t super extravagant with all the latest cabinets or organizers, but it works for me. Maybe you can get some ideas to use in your space and remember you don’t need a fancy craft room for stamping the most important thing is to just get your supplies out and stamp something to share with your friends and family even if it is in a cozy little closet.

I keep my ink pads and reinkers on the wall in holders my dad built for me and various supplies and tools are in the plastic bins.  My Big Shot station is on the counter the perfect height for me to stand and work.  The big cabinet to the left holds all my non-stamping crafting supplies.  I have a six foot table in the middle where I work.  To keep it clean I have a plastic tablecloth on it, that way when I have an inky mess I can just wipe it clean

Shelves that hold some of my non-SU stamps and some really old SU ones.

Two filing cabinets that hold all my cardstock, business files and card samples.  See that little desk?  That was once in that little closet when I had my first stamp room.  On it I have baskets with my punches, ribbon, washi and my DSP, glimmer paper and foil paper

dscn0629

I like my supplies in baskets so I can see everything at a glance.  My 12 x 12 DSP are in holders I found on clearance in OfficeMax

My stamps are in alphabetical order with all my Paper Pumpkin  kits above

Scissors, Aqua Painters, X-Acto knives, rulers and bone folders are in an old Pampered Chef utensil caddy.

Ink pads and reinkers, plus a stand for my heat gun. The baskets hold my embossing folders, Big Shot platforms and cutting plates.

My Big Shot station with adhesives in a plastic bin so they are always handy.

I do keep my room this neat when I’m not creating but when I am working it will take on a life of its own!

And this is what my table looks like when I’m stamping..

I hope you enjoyed my little stamp room tour, now you can see where I spend a lot of my time coming up with projects to share with all of you!

Inspiration, it’s everywhere!!

Posted in Card Ideas, Card Share, Holiday Catalog 2016, Personal Share by stamptilyoudrop

Where do you find inspiration for your stamping projects?

There are so many places to get ideas it can be mind boggling!  From Pinterest and YouTube to blogs like this one, we sometimes forget that inspiration is all around us.  I am always looking at my surroundings and wondering how I can use what I see in my stamping projects.

Driving in the early evening, take a look at the sunset you can almost visualize how it would make a stunning background or how beautiful the colors go together.  Next time you are in a fabric store be sure to look at all the different color combinations, you might see some you never would have thought of. Another great source for colors are home improvement TV shows.  I love watching makeover shows (I adore Chip & Joanna!) sometimes the color combinations sound crazy but when the room comes together it all fits.

At work I received a holiday card catalog that business firms use to send personalized cards out to their clients at the holidays. I was about to toss it when I decided to take a peek. It is chock full of awesome ideas that I can apply to my cards.

Sometime inspiration comes from things we never thought of.  I was wearing my paisley top the other day when I was shooting the a video featuring the new Paisleys & Posies set from the new catalog for a post this week and I had an aha moment.  The pattern and colors in my shirt  would make an awesome background for a card. And so that is how today’s share was born!

I stamped the paisley stamp using Basic Black Archival and colored it in with Crumb Cake, Smoky Slate and Basic Gray markers.

The next time you are having “stamper’s block”  just take a moment to look around and just observe.  You never know where the next great idea might come from!

Have an awesome Wednesday!! Make sure you check back tomorrow when the 2016 Holiday Catalog will be unveiled!!

Happy Stamping!

~Jo

David in front of the Olympic Rings

Today’s post isn’t stamping related but a personal post. While stamping is my passion, my family is my life as I’m sure is the same with all of you.

I wanted to share what my oldest son David is up to since he is experiencing a once in a lifetime opportunity.  He is a videographer for NBC Connecticut and was chosen to go to the Olympic Games in Rio for his station. His job has taken him all over, covering NCAA basketball games during March Madness, the President, the Pope’s visit last year, going to the Super Bowl and now he is in Rio.  He is doing amazing things and his father and I couldn’t be prouder of all he accomplished.

I’ll be back tomorrow with a product video tutorial.  Thank you for visiting and have a wonderful Wednesday!
